The Redmond Channel Partner Top 200: We’ll Feel At Home Here

Most of us are familiar with that special feeling that comes from time to time when you know you’re performing professionally at the top of your game. It’s beyond the sense of simply knowing you’re doing a good job – it’s the sense of hitting a home run, and being confident that you could immediately go out and do it again. That’s how I’m feeling about our Red Level team these days. Some recent news we received from Redmond Channel Partner, Microsoft’s knowledge-sharing site for Microsoft solution providers, is one of the main reasons why. We recently announced that Red Level had been named to Redmond Channel Partner’s “Top 200 Solution Providers” list, an annual index of the top 200 ...

PETYA RANSOMWARE: A New Threat To ‘Cry’ About – and a Simple Prevention Tip

It was only a month ago that I wrote in this space about the world’s lucky sidestep of the intended havoc mounted by the WannaCry ransomware attack. As our clients and regular readers of this site know, Red Level takes the ransomware menace very seriously: The damage and the expense such exploits cause is real and considerable, the potential negative impact they pose is increasing, and the exact nature of the threat is constantly changing.   For IT professionals, WannaCry, Cryptolocker and their fellow travelers are a continual source of aggravation, unease, and extra work. We know we can’t afford to be complacent, even for a moment. That’s why we were unhappy, but unsurprised, to learn of the new problems ...

#WANNACRY: A Happy Accident Is ‘Holding Back The Tears’ – For Now

An unfortunate truth about computer security is that would-be hackers only have to be lucky once, but data security specialists have to be lucky always. Today, it’s looking like we’re very lucky indeed – if only for the moment. If you’ve been following the stories (and the near-panic) surrounding the #WannaCry ransomware attack and have been concerned about your own systems’ potential vulnerability, the good news is that a British malware specialist’s quick thinking and good luck seems to have bought you some time. For those who don’t know, #WannaCry is a particularly malignant bit of malware currently being spread through some highly sophisticated phishing emails. When these are read and acted upon, they trigger the download of an application that ...

Google Docs Phishing Attack

If you haven’t seen the news alerts, there is a unique phishing attack going viral today exploiting Google Docs. It starts very legitimate using Google’s genuine sign-in page and then authorizes a malicious app named “Google Docs” to access your Gmail email and address book. For full details, see: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-switch/wp/2017/05/03/why-this-google-docs-phishing-attack-is-particularly-sneaky I was sent an email by a legitimate business contact that may be a real example of this phishing attack but Microsoft shut it down in 2 ways: It moved it to my Junk Folder and blocked the link (see below) “SafeLinks” within Exchange Online’s Advanced Threat Protection (EO ATP) blocked it (see below) Make sure your organization doesn't fall victim to the latest phishing attack

For Unprepared Businesses, Opportunities and Revenues are Gone with the Wind

It’s been a cold, dark few days for hundreds of thousands of Michigan residents – and a costly one for countless area businesses. Since the windstorms of March 8, it’s been hard to drive through any area of southeast Michigan without encountering disabled traffic signals, the sound of emergency generators, and scores of shuttered businesses. According to the Detroit Free Press, the storms’ 60 mile per hour wind gusts resulted in the single largest weather-caused power outage in Michigan history, with over 1 million Michigan homes going dark – as well as countless businesses. Even as crews work around the clock to restore service, nearly five days later, almost 100,000 homes and businesses remain powerless. The public hazard posed by ...

IT Investments: Time To Move From Uncertainty To Action

There’s very little that Americans seem to agree on these days – our recent, seemingly endless, election season demonstrated that. If there is one feeling that most people seem to have in common, though, it’s that they’re glad it’s finally over. Businesses have a particularly good reason to be glad: Election season represents a protracted period of uncertainty, and if there’s thing the marketplace has a problem with, it’s that. To strategize, plan, or budget effectively, you need a reasonably solid sense of what future circumstances are going to be like. Now that this election’s over, we have some sense of that. Even if the outcome isn’t to everyone’s liking, there’s a lot to be said for certitude: The way ...

HOPS AND IOPS: Good Beer, Good Times, Great Information!

We admit it. We’re technology junkies, and if you’re reading this you probably are too. It’s fun to learn more about new tools and systems – but it sure is a lot more fun when there’s beer involved. Last Thursday we hosted “Hops and IOPS” at Michigan Beer Company in Novi. There have been some exciting, game-changing developments in storage solutions lately that are going to make a big difference for a lot of companies, and we figured that our friends and clients would want to know about them. Judging by the response, we were right about that. Once everyone had had the chance to mingle a little and relax with flights of craft beer, Red Level’s emcee of the ...

Windows 10 – Up Close and Personal

Operating system upgrades are scary things. After all, every time you update, you’re guaranteed of having to change the way you do things at the very least  - and in a worst case, you may find some new bug or limitation keeps you from doing what you want at all. If you’ve held up on updating to Windows 10 up until now, your reasoning is understandable, but it’s probably about time to give it some serious thought. I’d like to share my personal Windows 10 experience. It's been almost a year since I began using Windows 10 on my first device. I was skeptical at first. I had used Windows 7 for years without any real issues. I had tried ...
