Smoothing the (Sometimes) Bumpy Path to the Cloud

For all of its entrepreneurial spirit and historical legacy of innovation, Southeast Michigan isn't Silicon Valley. This region built its business foundation on hardware, in the truest sense of the word - big factories, big machines, big cars - and lots of it. Given our mindset, a transition from a self-run, in-house IT infrastructure to the new and seemingly nebulous Cloud environment doesn't seem like the most natural move for many. Nonetheless, that's what Michigan businesses are doing - and they're doing it in droves. For many if not most companies, the Cloud question has become a matter of 'when,' not 'if.' Businesses are looking past their crowded, cable-filled server rooms and envisioning a future of fast, secure, accessible-anywhere applications, data and services. These businesses are immediately faced with some critical questions: What information and services should they move the Cloud? What benefits might they expect to receive? When should ...

PETYA RANSOMWARE: A New Threat To ‘Cry’ About – and a Simple Prevention Tip

It was only a month ago that I wrote in this space about the world’s lucky sidestep of the intended havoc mounted by the WannaCry ransomware attack. As our clients and regular readers of this site know, Red Level takes the ransomware menace very seriously: The damage and the expense such exploits cause is real and considerable, the potential negative impact they pose is increasing, and the exact nature of the threat is constantly changing.   For IT professionals, WannaCry, Cryptolocker and their fellow travelers are a continual source of aggravation, unease, and extra work. We know we can’t afford to be complacent, even for a moment. That’s why we were unhappy, but unsurprised, to learn of the new problems caused by Petya, a ransomware variant currently wreaking havoc in Europe, Australia, and in at least one US hospital.   Like WannaCry and Cryptolocker before it, Petya functions by unbreakably ...

Why A Quality Intranet Matters

We’ve all been there. You’re working for a company where the office culture is great, you get along with your co-workers and you love your job, but there’s one thing that drives you NUTS. No, it’s not the coffee maker that’s constantly on the fritz – it’s the intranet. From its lackluster search functionality to straight-up counterintuitive design, intranets often aren’t a glimmering example of usability. Often left on their own for years at a time, intranets become crusty and sad, leading to their often groan-inducing response. The reason behind it is understandable – in the midst of all the day-to-day work, it’s hard to focus on enterprise-wide solutions. Not to mention, the task of updating your intranet can seem daunting. You have to start from square one and make all the necessary edits: reorganizing and removing content, updating contacts, and ensuring your security is up to snuff. And we ...

You’ve come a long way, baby…

In 2004, Trucker hats topped everyone's head and The Incredibles topped the box office. MySpace was all the buzz in social media and flip phones buzzed in your pocket. Snoop Dogg dropped it like it was hot and Friends wrapped up their series run. That same year, three friends decided to become entrepreneurs and start something remarkable. A lot can change in 13 years. At least one thing hasn't. Red Level is still the company to call for game-changing IT services. Thanks for taking the leap all those years ago, Dave, Ed and Rob. We're excited for what comes next. Happy 13th Birthday, Red Level!

#WANNACRY: A Happy Accident Is ‘Holding Back The Tears’ – For Now

An unfortunate truth about computer security is that would-be hackers only have to be lucky once, but data security specialists have to be lucky always. Today, it’s looking like we’re very lucky indeed – if only for the moment. If you’ve been following the stories (and the near-panic) surrounding the #WannaCry ransomware attack and have been concerned about your own systems’ potential vulnerability, the good news is that a British malware specialist’s quick thinking and good luck seems to have bought you some time. For those who don’t know, #WannaCry is a particularly malignant bit of malware currently being spread through some highly sophisticated phishing emails. When these are read and acted upon, they trigger the download of an application that proceeds to encrypt a computer’s contents and demand a 300 Euro ($329) ransom, payable in Bitcoin, for the favor of decryption. Here’s what’s made #WannaCry really worth crying about. Firstly, ...

Massive Cyber Attack Moving Quick

As reported by USA Today, as many as 74 countries have been hit by a massive cyber attack. The attack has left hospitals, telecoms, universities and others locked out of their files. The attack is a variation of ransomware that is requiring money/bitcoin to retrieve their files. It hasn't hit Michigan or Detroit yet, but it might not be long before it does. This isn't the first of its kind and certainly won't be the last. But there are things you can do to help prevent becoming a victim of ransomware: Don't open emails from people or companies that you don't know. Don't click on any links or open any attachments with suspicious names. Do use the latest anti-virus and malware software available. Do update your systems with the latest software and patches. Check out our upcoming webinar on mobile security to see how we can help you keep your data ...

Google Docs Phishing Attack

If you haven’t seen the news alerts, there is a unique phishing attack going viral today exploiting Google Docs. It starts very legitimate using Google’s genuine sign-in page and then authorizes a malicious app named “Google Docs” to access your Gmail email and address book. For full details, see: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-switch/wp/2017/05/03/why-this-google-docs-phishing-attack-is-particularly-sneaky I was sent an email by a legitimate business contact that may be a real example of this phishing attack but Microsoft shut it down in 2 ways: It moved it to my Junk Folder and blocked the link (see below) “SafeLinks” within Exchange Online’s Advanced Threat Protection (EO ATP) blocked it (see below) Make sure your organization doesn't fall victim to the latest phishing attack
